The Avia Watch Company began in 1887 in Switzerland when H.V. Degoumois opened a watchmaking business in La Chaux-de-Fonds. H.V. Degoumois started the company in the heart of Swiss watchmaking. In 1933 The business moved to Neuchâtel, Switzerland. 1937 Degoumois officially registered the Avia brand name on January 30. Avia built strong mechanical lever-movement watches. Their movements were trusted by other famous names like Ball Watch Company and Wittnauer (a partner of Longines).
They launched well-known sport and dive watches, including the Avia Marino and the Avia Olympic. In 1968, Avia joined a group of six Swiss watch brands. This group created the world's first quartz digital watch with a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screen.
They showed the new digital watch to the public on March 6, 1972. Cheap mass-produced digital watches flooded the market in the 1980s, hurting Avia's original business. The Fossil Group bought the Avia brand . Fossil sells basic Avia-branded quartz watches today, which are separate from the vintage Swiss mechanical heritage.
