UMF (Uhren und Maschinenfabrik) Ruhla was a major East German watchmaker originating from the Thiel brothers' metal factory in 1862. Producing millions of highly accessible, mass-manufactured timepieces, the historic brand is most famous for its Caliber 24 movement and for being the first German watch to go into space.

UMF Ruhla History

  • 1862 - 1945 (The Thiel Era): Brothers Christian and Georg Thiel founded a metal components and clock factory in Thuringia, Germany. By 1892, they had introduced the world's first mass-produced pocket watch, building a reputation for durable and affordable timepieces.

  • 1945 - 1989 (The GDR Era): Following World War II, the factory fell into the Soviet zone and was nationalized as a Volkseigener Betrieb (VEB). The brand was reorganized as VEB Uhren und Maschinenfabrik Ruhla (UMF). During the 1960s and 70s, it employed up to 8,000 workers and produced around 5 million watches per year.

  • 1963 (The Caliber 24): UMF introduced its landmark Caliber 24 movement. Entirely assembled by automated machinery, it became a massive volume driver with over 130 million units produced. This pin-pallet movement was flexible enough to power men's, women's, and children's watches, as well as dashboard clocks for Trabant rally cars.

  • 1978 (Space History): East German cosmonaut Sigmund Jähn took four UMF Ruhla watches into space aboard the Soyuz 31/Salyut 6 mission, making Ruhla the first German brand worn in space.

  • Post-1990 (Reunification and Revival): After the collapse of the GDR, the state-owned conglomerate was broken up and production stopped. Former engineers bought the clock plant and reorganized as Gardé Uhren und Feinmechanik Ruhla GmbH, which continues to manufacture watches today. The original 1929 factory building now houses the Ruhla Clock Museum.
