- 1961: The Beginning: HMT set up its first factory in Bangalore with Japanese technical collaboration and released its first batch of hand-wound wristwatches, inaugurated by Prime Minister Nehru.
- 1970s Expansion: Production expanded to meet high demand. In 1972, a second factory was established in Bangalore for automatic watches.
- Production Hubs: Additional manufacturing facilities were set up in Tumkur (1978) and Ranibagh (1985).
- The "Timekeepers of the Nation": Throughout the 1970s and 80s, HMT dominated the Indian market due to import restrictions on foreign brands, becoming a household name.
- Technological Shift: While famous for manual mechanical watches, HMT later introduced quartz watches in collaboration with Citizen.
- Decline (1990s-2016): The arrival of Titan and the quartz revolution in the late 1980s, coupled with liberalization, saw HMT’s market share drop. The company incurred heavy losses, leading to the closure of its watch production unit in 2016.
