HMT watches originated in 1961 as a collaboration between Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) and Japan's Citizen Watch Co., marking India's first watch manufacturer. They gained immense popularity and were a symbol of achievement, given as gifts for milestones like graduations. Initially producing mechanical watches like the popular Janata model, HMT expanded to produce components, and later, quartz watches. However, the rise of quartz technology and new competition, such as Titan, led to a decline for HMT by the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
