Enicar Automatic 25 Jewel Day/Date Watch - Serviced

£139.00Price

A very attractive Enicar watch just returned from a full service, and presented in superb condition.

Housed in a solid Stainless-Steel 35mmx42mm case, with a stunning Royal blue pennant dial, which would seem to have been restored at some point - The Day/Date functions correctly, semi quick set only on the bias between 8 and 12. The case back is elaborately cast, showing a leaping dolphin with Enicar's "Jupiter" logo. The overhauled 25 Jewel movement runs to time.

Founded in 1913 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Enicar was created by husband and wife Ariste Racine and Emma Blatt. Because the Racine family name was already trademarked, Emma cleverly reversed it to name the brand. Enicar is best known for its rugged "Sherpa" sports watches and high-precision, in-house mechanical movements.

  • Following the brand's founding, the company moved to a factory in Lengnau in 1919. By the late 1940s, they adopted their iconic Saturn logo, a nod to timekeeping mythology.

  • The Sherpa Era: In 1956, Enicar outfitted a Swiss mountaineering team that conquered Mount Everest and Lhotse. Capitalizing on this success, Enicar launched the famous Sherpa line. This rugged watch became the foundation for several iconic 1960s tool watches, including the Sherpa Guide (world-timer), Sherpa Jet (GMT), and the Sherpa Graph (racing chronograph).

  • Ultrasonic Precision: In the 1950s, Enicar developed highly reliable movements, adopting an ultrasonic method for cleaning and oiling watch parts. Their caliber AR10 won official C.O.S.C. chronometer certification in 1954.

  • The Quartz Crisis & Revival: Like many mechanical Swiss brands, Enicar struggled through the 1970s and 1980s. Despite restructuring in the early 1980s, the company was liquidated in 1987. In 1988, the trademark was acquired by Hong Kong-based Wah Ming Hong Ltd., which had been Enicar's primary distributor in China since the 1930s.

  • Today, Enicar operates primarily out of Asia, catering to a strong market in China while maintaining a presence in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Vintage Enicar chronographs and Sherpa models have seen a massive surge in popularity among collectors and vintage watch enthusiasts
