The Anglo-Celtic Watch Company was a major British watch manufacturing enterprise based at the Gurnos Works in Ystradgynlais, Wales, producing over 30 million affordable watches from 1946 until 1980. Established in August 1946 with government backing during post-war economic readjustment. Formed as a joint venture equally owned by Smiths, Ingersoll ,and engineering firm Vickers-Armstrong. Vickers-Armstrong sold its shares in 1948. Smiths eventually took total control of the company by 1969 after Ingersoll withdrew. Known locally as "The Tick Tock," it grew into Britain's largest watch factory and one of the largest in Europe. Peaked at over 1,400 workers, roughly 72% of whom were women. It was rare for producing watches entirely under one roof—from raw materials to the final packaged item—except for bought-in hairsprings and crystals. Produced popular-grade wristwatches and pocket watches, including the Smiths Empire, Ingersoll, and Services lines using pin-pallet and lever movements. Production of watches and movements wound down by 1980 as market conditions shifted, with the facility transitioning into car component manufacturing under Lucas SEI.
