1960s Valex Cal 15 Automatic Winding Watch

A most attractive early 1960's watch by Valex, lovely champagne dial, with applied stylised numerals, and arrowhead markers. The watch is in a 33mmx42mm chromed case, which is in excellent condition, the “Cal 15” movement works well, and keeps time and a new brown leather strap is fitted.
In July 1951 the trademark "Valex", which Welta registered in December 1943, was sold to G. L. Newman & Co. Ltd., New House, 67/8, Hatton Garden, London. "Valex" watches were sold by them on the UK market, with an interesting approach to advertising. One campaign in 1964 featured jewellers giving their opinions on Valex watches, while another insisted the customer should be shown the movement, presumably whether or not they were interested.
“Show the watch movement to the public ” is the theme of a new campaign by Valex who will tell the public in the TV Times and other programme papers, “ Your jeweller won’t let you buy this Valex watch on its face value. . . He’ll insist on telling you about the movement.” The text the advertisements states, “To date it’s possible you've never heard of Valex Swiss watches. . . So we don’t ask you to take this watch on its face value alone. . .” Then a movement is illustrated.
Who made Valex watches for G. L. Newman is another matter. They may have been made by Welta for a time, but by the 1960s, Welta & Orion had been taken over by Basis Watch, and they specialised in watches with pin lever movements.
